Metabolic Food Requirements for Your Pet

Calculating metabolic food requirements for a dog or cat is an important aspect of pet nutrition. It helps to ensure that your pet is getting the right amount of nutrients and calories to maintain a healthy weight and overall health. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to calculate metabolic food requirements for your pet:

  • Calculate Resting Energy Requirement (RER)
    • The Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is the amount of energy required for a pet to maintain their basic bodily functions. It can be calculated using the following formula:
      • RER (kcal/day) = 70 x (body weight in kg)^(0.75) for dogs
      • RER (kcal/day) = 30 x (body weight in kg) + 70 for cats
    • Adjust for Activity Level
      • Once you have calculated your pet’s RER, you need to adjust it based on their activity level. The activity level can be classified as sedentary, moderately active, or highly active. To calculate the total energy requirement (TER) for your pet, multiply the RER by the appropriate activity factor:
        • Sedentary: RER x 1.2
        • Moderately Active: RER x 1.5
        • Highly Active: RER x 2.0
      • Adjust for Neutering Status
        • If your pet is neutered, you may need to adjust their TER. Neutered pets have a lower energy requirement, so you should multiply the TER by 0.8 for neutered cats and 0.6 for neutered dogs.
      • Calculate Daily Caloric Intake
        • Once you have calculated your pet’s TER, you can calculate their daily caloric intake. Divide the TER by the number of meals your pet eats in a day. For example, if your pet eats two meals a day, divide their TER by 2 to get their daily caloric intake per meal.
      • Consult with Your Veterinarian
        • Consult with your veterinarian to make sure that the calculated caloric intake is appropriate for your pet’s specific needs and health conditions.

By following these steps, you can calculate your pet’s metabolic food requirements and ensure that they are getting the right amount of nutrients and calories to maintain their health and wellbeing.
